ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
For many years my art has been based on interpretive incorporation of the human presence within the American landscape, acknowledging an artistic legacy that spans over one hundred fifty years of American aesthetics. Current work involves paintings, sculpture, and works on paper, inspired by where I am and where I have been. My style has been described as both colorist and minimalist. In my art, I seek to produce a simple, subtle, and sublime presentation of the environment and atmosphere of a particular place.
As an artist I believe that public art should specifically relate to the place in which it is sited, whether in abstract or representative form, and to have a special meaning or relation to the location. My experience with public art dates back to the 1970’s when I worked as an assistant to Robert Cronbach on large minimalist sculptures. More recently I have worked with local artist Steven Weitzman as a team artist, maquette maker, and studio manager. I was an Artist-in-Residence at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis from 2009 to 2012.
In developing a concept for a public art solution, I initially research the site location and history, keeping in mind how the final presentation will relate to the viewing community. My designs are able to be presented in a variety of methods, from free-standing sculpture, to bas-relief, to wall murals. I am familiar with a variety of media and have sufficient technical knowledge and skill either to complete the work myself, or to know where and how to have the work professionally completed by others.
