American Fortitude, 2026Acrylic on canvas, 24"x36"As part of the recognition of America’s 250th celebration, the painting, American Fortitude, depicts more than a sunset with airplane vapor trails. This painting presents an abstraction of the Missing Man Formation over “Our Banner in the Sky,” shown as a symbolic sunset over the Chesapeake Bay. The painting is inspired by Frederic Church's 1861 painting, Our Banner in the Sky.
American Fortitude was commissioned by St. Maries Choral Arts for exhibition during their 2026 Spring Concerts, “American Voices.” American Fortitude is a tribute to all those who have served our country and especially to retired Navy pilot Commander Andrew Mechling, who died in a plane crash 28 February 2026, and to my brother-in-law, US Army Air Forces 1st Lt. DIGITAL PHOTOMONTAGES- The American Farmland SeriesMy recent work has included a series of digital photomontages that have a perspective on the demise of American farmland through excessive development.
My family history is founded on Midwestern farming, and my imagery incorporates family photographs and public domain photos from the Farm Security Administration the 1930’s with recent photographs that I have taken. I seek to present a subtle yet poignant visual statement.

(Once) the Farmer’s Field is a photographic montage of combining part of a 1936 FSA (Farm Security Administration) photo by Charlotte Park, titled Plowing in Maryland with my photograph of a modern Southern Maryland sub-division.
The intent of this image is to present an allegorical reference to the repurposing of land, notably from traditional agricultural use to residential and commercial development, and perhaps to question the profit motive of such repurpose.

Walmart Bought the FarmHand-colored digital photomontagesigned en-verso by Gary JamesonPrinted in 2024This image is an allegory of continued encroachment of commercial development. Perhaps it is just the changing times that see the mega-stores displacing not only farmland but also small local businesses.
This digital photomontage combines an old photograph of the Illinois farm that was in my family from the 1860’s until my grandfather lost the property during the Great Depression with my recent photograph of the local Walmart store and parking lot.

Gary Jameson’s art has been influenced and inspired by the historical legacy of the American aesthetic. Jameson currently is working on a series of digital montages that combine imagery of locations past with present. Jameson has a BFA degree from the University of Illinois, a MFA degree from Northern Illinois University and is an alumnus of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Jameson was an Artist-in-Residence at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis from 2009 to 2012, and currently teaches at the College of Southern Maryland.
For years my art has been based on an interpretive incorporation of the human presence within the American landscape, acknowledging an artistic legacy that spans over one hundred fifty years of American aesthetics. Current work involves imagery inspired by where I am and where I have been.
